“Kid Joi - Let Me Go”
“Let Me Go” is a spine-chilling, emotional Melodic Trap song from Detroit-native artist Kid Joi. Which was released on January 28th, 2022. It runs for 4 minutes and 26 seconds, and in terms of listening experience, it feels much shorter than that, but its heaviness can certainly create a moment for the listener which feels much longer than this time constraint. The beat is very efficient: simple and haunting; consisting of a piano melody and heavy drums, as well as a symphony of strings and vocal harmonizations. The vocals are VERY distinctive and well-defined, with strong inflections and pronunciation. They are sharp at some points in the song, and softer at others which allows us to feel both the angst in her voice as well as the pain. The subject matter of the song is also very heavy, and she addresses it in a very sincere and raw manner. The artist discusses what was apparently a relationship with an ex-partner, that from the sounds of it was toxic and detrimental to her health, as she was berated, gaslighted, and emotionally shut out. Kid Joi expresses all of these things in a very explosive manner which creates a cathartic plead for freedom. This is my first time hearing of Kid Joi or hearing something of hers, I was just scrolling on Instagram a few days ago when I saw this post. I’m glad that I did, as I liked the song a lot, and I am definitely excited to hear more from her.
