JID - The Forever Story
Sitting at 15 tracks spread over 59 minutes and 12 seconds, The Forever Story by JID gives us so much without overstaying its welcome. It was released on August 26th, 2022. I classify this album as Hip hop, although it veers in so many directions, taking influence from multiple genres and creating a rich pool of sounds. The Atlanta native uses his emcee abilities, along with the aid of other artistic techniques to build an immersive soundscape, all telling one giant story.
Tony Shhnow - Don’t Look At Numbers (Lost Kids Edition) Remix feat. Brent Faiyaz
If you have not heard of Tony Shhnow yet, now is a great time. He is a versatile LAX native who has been taking the Atlanta Plugg scene and the underground at large by storm for quite some time now. “Don’t Look At Numbers (Lost Kids Edition)” is a remix of the 3rd cut off his latest album, the critically acclaimed Reflexions. The track runs for 3 minutes and 37 seconds and was released on August 19th, 2022. He enlists none other than Brent Faiyaz, who delivers a stellar vocal performance, scaling the notes of the beat beautifully.
Summrs - FALLEN RAVEN
FALLEN RAVEN is Summrs’ passionate new 23-piece Hip hop project. Released on June 27th, 2022, this massive project runs for 54 minutes and 33 seconds. It is full of melodies that range from banging and aggressive—with “Dont Mean Shit” for example, which hits with hard bass and an unchained synth progression—all the way to slow and somber, on cuts like “Dear Mom”. The track features a plethora of content, both musically and lyrically. He goes into elaborate detail about topics such as his lifestyle, struggles, family, and more.
The Coyotes - Can’t Dance
“Can’t Dance” is The Coyote’s funky new Rock single. Running for 4 minutes and 7 seconds, the track is a web of sounds that they spun together to create a web in which the man in this hypothetical is stuck, just waiting to be eaten by the spider crawling towards him. With each strand of silk, the 4-boy-Boone-based-band (sorry) uses a different instrument to create one of the threads, all leading to the spiral where this man is caught.
MuddyMya - MUDDYWORLD V2
MUDDYWORLD V2 is a supercharged, euphoric Hip hop project from rising superstar MuddyMya. At 10 songs, the project contains 25 minutes and 1 second of exciting, head-rushing thrills and stimulation. Executive produced by boundless right-hand producer OK, the beats on this track have just as much energy as they do substance; between the moody, dynamic synth melodies, the hard-hitting, low fidelity drums, and the dissonant sound effects, the only way I know how to describe them is lysergic.
Future - I NEVER LIKED YOU
I NEVER LIKED YOU is one of my favorite Future albums. Released on May 2nd, 2022, it encompasses all of my favorite aspects of Future’s music. While the album integrates many styles not normally associated with Future, such as RnB, the general feel of the album is refreshingly energetic and exhilarating. The album begins with an eerie instrumental intro. Future then enters with a head-banging flow, reasserting himself as a titan of hip-hop; a “God on the earth” in his own words.
Mercury - tabula rasa
tabula rasa is the forward-thinking, mold-breaking 10-piece album from bustling Atlanta artist Mercury. It is her second project to date, following her incredible 2021 release MERCTAPE. Released on April 20th, 2022, the Southern Hip hop album is packed full of elements and influences from Electronic, Reggae, Rhythm and blues, and many more genres. All of these sounds bring life to the already-vibrant personality and vocal performances of the artist, which shine through in a very fun and colorful way on each track.
Freshie - dirtyBOY!
dirtyBOY! is Freshie’s highly-anticipated 14-track Hip hop project. Released at midnight on March 25th, 2022, it totals a cool 32 minutes and 43 seconds. The project incorporates elements of many genres and sounds, both vocally and instrumentally. It manages to harness them in a manner that allows Freshie to appropriately express what he is feeling and trying to get out on each track.
Sly Mike - Higher Perception
Higher Perception is a double Hip hop single from rising Winston-Salem, North Carolina-native independent artist and producer Sly Mike. It was released on March 18th, 2022, and runs for 4 minutes and 53 seconds. The 2-piece is comprised of “Xotic” and “Vibes”: two tracks that are great by themselves, but certainly compliment each other when juxtaposed.
Warhol.SS - Where’s Warhol 2
Where’s Warhol 2 is the long-awaited sequel to Warhol.SS’ 2017 album Where’s Warhol which was released on September 5th, 2017. The second installment of the series, released on March 11th, 2022, maintains a low profile but brings high amounts of energy and tons of experience.
Duwap Kaine - A Dogg’s Influence
A Dogg’s Influence is the latest offering from Savannah, Georgia-native Duwap Kaine. The mixtape is 20 songs that add up to create 42 minutes and 2 seconds of Hip hop at its best. It was released on March 7th, 2022. Duwap does a great job of telling his story and personal truth while still holding onto himself in the present, and being prepared for the future.
Dylan Innes - Little Blue House
“Little Blue House” is the latest offering from Dylan Innes, a North Carolina-native singer-songwriter. The track, released on December 10th, 2021, is serene and reflective. It sees the artist stuck in a state of uncertainty and introspection, as he grapples with the question of what we have once our weekend ends. This is a significant question to ponder, as it is true, we live our lives and have fun, and then what? We are left with nothing to show, and feel empty.
“Kid Joi - Let Me Go”
“Let Me Go” is a spine-chilling, emotional melodic Trap song from Detroit-native artist Kid Joi. Which was released on January 28th, 2022. It runs for 4 minutes and 26 seconds, and in terms of listening experience, it feels much shorter than that, but its heaviness can certainly create a moment for the listener which feels much longer than this time constraint.
Babe Haven - Babe Haven
Babe Haven is a 4-track debut Punk EP from Babe Haven. It was released on December 3rd, 2021, and runs for 11 minutes and 43 seconds. The project is a concise and effective display of a variety of sounds, ranging from a softer, more serene ballad (no pun intended) to a more aggressive, head-banging thrasher.
